Plot
After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return to their home in Winter River. Lydia, still haunted by Beetlejuice, finds her life turned upside down when her teenage daughter Astrid accidentally opens a portal to the afterlife. Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci discuss why filming Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice was an experience they’ll never forget. Tim Burton said the film would only be made if Michael Keaton returned to reprise his role. Lydia informs Astrid that Rory wants to get married at midnight on Halloween night.

Having only recently seen the original film, I wasn’t really looking forward to it
In that sense, I might rate it differently than someone who was a fan of the classic, so keep that in mind. Overall, I had a great time and thought the film was a decent sequel to the cult classic. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who I have been a fan of since I watched Smallville as a kid, bring their unique style of storytelling to the world of *Beetlejuice* in a film that is very different from its predecessor, but in a new way that also respects the original. Tim Burton of course brings his own unique style, and the film certainly feels like a Tim Burton film in every sense of the word. The visuals and production design are beautifully done, with the classic feel of Burton’s films from the 80s and 90s, but enhanced by today’s technology and more expansive options.
The acting in the film was excellent from all involved
Michael Keaton looks and acts exactly the same in the iconic role as if it had not been 36 years since the first film. Winona Ryder, who has much more experience from the original film, carries the film with pride, and the wonderful Justin Theroux is hilarious in his own way. Jenna Ortega, while giving a good performance, seems to me to have been a bit overexposed in recent years and to feel like her presence is inevitable wherever you look. To justify the hype, I would like to see her in a more challenging role, featuring a radically different performance than what she usually does. Another standout performance in the film is Willem Dafoe in an excellent and unconventional comedic role.
Overall, the cast is full of big names who are always a pleasure to watch on screen
Another strong point of the film is the musical aspect that the first film was known for. A good selection of songs, especially the funny “musical numbers.” Overall, despite having only recently seen the first film, it is impossible to ignore the amount of fan service in this film for fans of classic cinema – and I mean that in the most positive way possible. It’s not that tired, modern fan service you’ve seen in so many franchise films lately, but rather something that honors the original and gives fans who’ve been waiting for a sequel what they wanted, all in one logical and enjoyable way that stays true to the spirit of the story and what cinema should be.
